A French 18 karat (18K) yellow gold, diamond and ruby love forever charm pendant with a rebus spelling out "Plus qu'hier, moins que demain" ("More than yesterday, less than tomorrow") - a line taken from the love poem written by Rosemonde Gerard to her husband (the author of Cyrano) in 1889.
This is an early and rare example of the tokens created by Alphonse Augis in 1907 in response to the poem, with an unusual shield shape outline and a wreath of ivy leaves to indicate the everlasting nature of love.
The word "plus" is symbolised by a plus sign set with five rose-cut white diamonds with a total approximate weight of 0.02 carats, and the word "moins" by a minus sign set with two rectangular cut synthetic rubies with a total carat weight of approximately 0.04 carats.
Stamped with the eagle's head for French manufacture and 18 karat gold and Augis’ maker’s mark.
