A French 18 karat (18K) yellow gold, diamond and ruby love charm pendant with a rebus spelling out "Plus qu'hier, moins que demain" ("More than yesterday, less than tomorrow") - a line taken from the love poem written by Rosemonde Gerard to her husband (the author of Cyrano) in 1889.
This is a mid-century example of the tokens created by Alphonse Augis in 1907 in response to the poem, signed A.A. with a "crepe de chine" textured background and floral and laurel wreath border to indicate the triumph of love.
The word "plus" is symbolised by a plus sign set with a single-cut white diamond with a total approximate weight of 0.01 carats, and the word "moins" by a minus sign set with two rectangular cut synthetic rubies with a total carat weight of approximately 0.04 carats.
Signed A.A., marked ‘Depose’, and stamped with the eagles head for French manufacture and 18 karat gold and Augis’ maker’s mark.
Dimensions: 2 x 1.6 x 0.18 cm (not including jump ring)
Weight: 2.84 grams
(Chain not included)
